A new book called Phoenix Rising - Starting over after domestic violence. This is a book about the journey that women who have experienced domestic violence and are rebuilding their lives (survivor) have to go through after escaping from their violent partner. The book is researched and written by female survivors themselves.

Thanks to funds obtained from the President’s Award for Creativity, which is managed by the Malta Council for the Arts, this publication is the culmination of a wider project My Survival, My Experience.

The nine chapters of this book open a window on the turbulent world of violence and manipulation, and the great efforts against oppression and despair. The chapters include five qualitative research papers with twenty-two women who have overcome violence, and an account of their collective experience. The publication discusses common topics such as experiences at police stations, experiences in the Courts, what it means for a woman with children to end up homeless, and the effects of economic violence, mediation and separation on female survivors. The latter chapter includes recommendations for best practices that emerged from the Foundation’s SOAR National Service Conference, held in December 2015.

Phoenix Rising is a testament to the great courage of women survivors and their determination to overcome major obstacles in the systems, in order to ensure their right to a dignified life without cruelty and violence.

This book is the result of working closely with hundreds of relative-carers we have come in contact with in our daily work. Relative-carers are those family members who take on the great responsibility of caring for a dear loved one who is mentally ill without seeking payment and honors. They care for their sick relatives with patience, humility, love, a sense of duty, and many sacrifices. They do their best to give their relatives an anchor in society.

They are often the only friends who are left when everyone is away from life. Relatives are those who, when they find themselves in pitch darkness, do not curse the darkness but light a torch. They are the ones who make lemonade from lemons. Although they deserve every honor, there are still those who consider themselves the cause of the disease. As the treatment of mental illness is being provided in the community, and as the family is carrying the burden of care within itself, we felt the need to continue to offer information that will help relatives learn more about how to take care of their relative with mental illness.

This is the second book published in partnership between the St Jeanne Antide Foundation and the Mental Health Association, two organizations that work hand in hand to continue  helping relatives with the great responsibility they bear with less suffering and more wisdom. We decided to deal with a different mental illness in each chapter and give practical suggestions on how to continue to offer love and care without giving up and without breaking down and stopping because they are discouraged. We chose to focus on the mental illness we encounter most in our work in the community.

This book can also be useful for anyone who knows someone who suffers from a mental illness - or colleagues at work, or neighbors or friends. It may also be of interest to professionals in the fields of social work, psychology, counseling, law, nursing, and medicine, and to kill those who are studying and interested in the field of mental health. It is very easy for each of us to meet people with mental illness. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) says that mental illness is more common than cancer, heart disease and diabetes all of a sudden.

Pilots know how to steer in storms, they have many ways to get help in order to sail and arrive safe and sound. Relatives caring for a dear family member with a mental illness also need shelter from the storm. With this tool, you lighten the burden because it helps them do what they are doing with love and worthwhile while staying healthy.

This is a story for young people about domestic violence from the perspective of the same girl at the ages of 6, 9, 12 and 15. It was written by the Foundation’s SOAR Service Coordinator offering advocacy and assistance to women who have experienced violence in their relationships. This book will be used during workshops with young people in different contexts.
