Our Stories of
Corporate Social Responsibility
Partnerships
Very recently, the CORE Platform launched The National Action Plan on CSR for Malta. The Plan aims to support businesses in the country to foster a culture of responsible corporate practices within both the workplace and the marketplace, create sustainable and fair relationships with employees, clients and suppliers, embrace diversity, build positive relationships with the community and take due consideration of their impact on the environment.

Over the years, our NGO has developed several partnerships with corporate bodies. We highly value these corporate partners and, as a gesture of gratitude, we are presenting a number of case studies to highlight how the corporate world of business and finance is teaming up with NGOs like ours whose passion and mission it is to creatively support vulnerable families that are finding it increasingly harder to cope with their complex life challenges.
We hope that these examples will enthuse small and large corporate bodies to consider expanding their notion and practice of CSR.

The Alfred Mizzi Foundation
Website
For our NGO, The Alfred Mizzi Foundation is the foremost private corporate donor. Over the last 10 years, The Alfred Mizzi Foundation (TAMF) has been supporting the St Jeanne Antide Foundation (VO/005) with small annual grants in support of one or another of its core family support services. In May 2018, TAMF stepped up its financial support to our NGO to enable it to sustain its current operations and to be in a better position to innovate.
Our NGO considers TAMF the leading private social solidarity donor in Malta. It is farsighted and visionary. For our NGO in particular, the 2018-2020 TAMF grant came at a time when NGO financing in Malta had become precarious. Funding opportunities had become project based forcing family service NGOs to squeeze elements of their holistic services into the constraints of a short-term project.

TAMF-SJAF CSR Partnership
Thanks to TAMF, SJAF has been able to avoid service closures, re-group, consolidate and re-strategise while continuing to meet the needs of an average of 350 vulnerable families each year during this funding period of 2018 to 2020. In the meantime, our NGO has been able to maintain its high standards of service provision to individuals and families who are experiencing very difficult life circumstances. In fact, in early 2019, SJAF operations were assessed by the Social Care Standards Authority (SCSA) and received licenses to operate 5 services.
The SJAF team of workers and hundreds of families being supported are highly grateful to TAMF for the faith, trust, confidence and investment it has placed in the dedicated work that SJAF carries out among the most vulnerable in our communities. The TAMF investment in the social mission of the St Jeanne Antide Foundation is a unique example of corporate social responsibility at its best. Such a contribution leaves an NGO with less uncertainty, more job security for employees, and more time to concentrate on the real job of working with vulnerable persons and families towards their relief and self-empowerment with the skills and confidence that they need to cope with their distress, to access public services, and so on.

The QP-SJAF CSR partnership
The QP-SJAF CSR partnership kicked off in 2019 when the Corporate Sustainability Department of HSBC Malta p.l.c. put us in touch with the then CEO of QP – David Xuereb – to explore the possibility of pro bono professional services for our NGO’s infrastructural project – the renovation of an old town house in Tarxien that would eventually function as the national SOAR Service Hub run by survivors of domestic violence in support of victims and survivors of violence against women. Since then, a dedicated professional team at QP provided the following services:
· Preparing the actual floor plans since none existed.
· Holding meetings with our team and carrying out site visits leading to the preparation of the proposed floor plans incorporating all the required renovation works.
· Preparing a detailed Planning Authority application PA and following up all PA queries during the pre-permit assessment process.
· Site visit to determine the state of the wooden beams and liaising with a company that would undertake beam testing and inspection and final report with recommendations.
· Designing internal finishing layout, including site visit by an engineer and a designer to discuss how the electrical and plumbing system could be accessed.
· Site visit to neighbouring households to check the building periphery prior to the eventual commencement of works.
· Managing the Irrestawra Darek application to prepare a Method Statement for the restoration of the façade.
· Advised regarding the specifications for the solar panels, and heat pumps versus water heaters.
· 3D rendering of the building for use during a fundraising campaign.
The QP team has always been available for discussions and planning execution. We are very grateful to the QP team for its sustained professional support.

HSBC MALTA P.L.C.
The HSBC Malta Foundation of the HSBC Bank Malta p.l.c. has, for many years, carried out a number of initiatives in support of the family services run by our NGO. These partnerships enable us to continue our support services for vulnerable persons experiencing hardship, poverty and social exclusion. These are a few examples of the meaningful partnership with HSBC Malta p.l.c. that has evolved over a number of years:
Team Volunteering: groups of HSBC Malta p.l.c. employees occasionally volunteer for clean-up events.
Mobilising other CSR teams: Our NGO has also benefitted from CSR days undertaken by other companies that HSBC encourages to get in touch with our organisation. One company accepted to renovate and furnish a house of a poor service user – a first in this type of social volunteering accepted by corporate organisations.
Child Learning Support: One of the bank’s high level employees has been providing one-to-one learning support to a child from a vulnerable family the Foundation has been helping since many years. She has been a regular volunteer for 3 years, spending a weekly two hours helping the child with reading, writing, oracy and homework at the Foundation’s Ċentru Antida Family Services Centre in Tarxien. The HSBC Volunteer extended her support throughout the 2019 summer months as well by visiting the family home and working with the child in his home context to maximise learning outcomes.
Finding companies that are ready to provide professional pro bono services for infrastructural projects. Companies that have responded to appeals from the bank’s Corporate Sustainability Department included Vassallo Group (the group covered the renovation costs of the façade of the SJAF charity shop in Tarxien Road a couple of years ago); Forestals Ltd (their team fully refurbished and furnished an apartments of a very vulnerable woman); and QP (see our Stories from CSR number 2).
Raising in-kind support: Bank employees at the HSBC’s Call Centre in Swatar run campaigns to collect much-needed personal hygiene items for vulnerable women being supported by a number of NGOs, including ours.
Supporting our organisation to market our hand-made crafts products: Our volunteers are invited to sell quality handicrafts at HSBC headoffice.
Outings for families: HSBC fully organises outings for service-using families. Such events expose families to the world around them and the fun they can have together.
Providing used office furnishings for us when upgrading theirs.
During our start-up year – 2008 – the HSBC Malta Foundation provided us with a much needed PABX system.

APS
APS Bank supports a number of community projects and initiatives on an ongoing basis. These are generally selected for their significance to a specific sector of society such as youth or people with special needs, or to support specific areas of Maltese culture, such as music or visual arts. The Bank’s philosophy is to create partnerships that are just, sustainable and of mutual value. Through various direct initiatives, support is given to charitable, voluntary and community projects that meet the Bank’s social support philosophy and bank staff is encouraged to pursue various activities in voluntary work to take an active role in matters that are so vital to society at large.
The APS Bank-SJAF CSR partnership
During 2018, APS Bank and our NGO embarked on a partnership with the objective to address the topic of violence made at women through the activities of our SOAR Service – survivors of domestic violence supporting and mentoring other survivors and guiding victims to seek support for their own and their children’s safety and well-being. APS became very interested in the self-expressive art produced by survivors and organized an Art Exhibition at its Swatar head office. The exhibited paintings were approved for publishing by the survivors themselves; they also wrote poignant captions which best described their feelings at the time of painting. APS bank was responsible for printing the paintings and captions on a large board and used these for the exhibition. An exhibition catalogue was also produced. The exhibition ran from the 8th of March to the 12th of April 2019.
For 2019-2020, APS Bank and our NGO embarked on another partnership on the theme of women in caring roles. As with the 2019 art exhibition, APS will be organizing another exhibition of paintings produced by caregiving women as part of an Art Therapy programme which is currently taking place.
Our NGO is very grateful to APS bank for its placing its trust in the Foundation’s SOAR Service initiative and for highlighting the scourge of intimate partner violence and domestic violence. SOAR women offer, among a range of supports, peer-to-peer mentoring to make it more possible for survivors to move forward in life.

CONFRATERNITY OF CHARITY OF THE B.V.M.
The Ven.da Confraternity of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Ven.da Confraternity of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded in the Collegiate Parish Church of St. Paul the Shipwrecked, Valletta, in 1610. The purpose for which it was founded was to help the poor in their spiritual and temporal needs.
The Confraternity of Charity, as we refer to it in brief, has a long and very interesting history. It was founded at the end of the sixteenth century when it obtained canonical approval from Pope Clement VIII (1592-1605) with an Apostolic Bull subsequently confirmed by Pope Paul V (1605-1621) and executed by the Diocesan Bishop Monsignor Fra Tommaso Gargallo on December 2, 1610. The Statute was approved by another Decree on May 25, 1611.
By virtue of a Pontifical Bull issued on 26 August 1611, the Confraternity was aggregated with the Archconfraternity of St. Gerolamo of Rome. The Statutes were then revised by Decree of 7 December 1628.
As time went on, foundations and legacies were made to the Confraternity, always with the main purpose of helping the poor and the needy.

Over the past three years, the St Jeanne Antide Foundation received two substantial donations from the Confraternity of Charity which enabled the Foundation to purchase food items and other products needed by many families in distress assisted by the Foundation. The Confraternity generously covered each bill up to a maximum stipulated by it. In-kind assistance is accessed by the Foundation's staff who, annually, provide professional support to over 600 individuals from 360 families in difficulty through the Community Social Work Service, the SOAR Service run by trained women who suffered the harsh reality of domestic violence, the LWIEN Service that provides guidance and support to relatives who shoulder the responsibility of caring for a family member with mental difficulties, and other work.

To this end, the Deloitte Foundation had the pleasure of collaborating with the St Jeanne Antide by donating a cash donation in August 2020 and a substantial supply of food products in May 2021 in order to help struggling families and individuals with their everyday needs.
Environmental Sustainability: As a leading professional services firm, Deloitte has a significant responsibility to care for the planet. COOL
St Jeanne Antide Foundation teams up with Cool to deliver food to families in need
During the Covid-19 crisis, the NGO St Jeanne Antide Foundation (SJAF) has been very active in assisting distressed and vulnerable individuals and families through wide-ranging support measures including social work, mentoring, debt relief, access to personal and home hygiene products as well as cooked meals or the provision and delivery of food packages.
In view of the surge in requests for assistance during these challenge months, SJAF turned on the corporate world to seek support in providing this support. Cool, the ride-pooling company, responded very positively and swiftly to SJAF’s request for transport to deliver support packages to families in difficulty.
This assistance served as a lifeline for the Foundation in view that, during these past COVID-19 pandemic months, SJAF staff had to operate remotely. Most of the volunteers supporting the families in need either had out-of-school children or elderly parents to take care of, or where 65+ and thus falling under the vulnerable persons category.
Nora Macelli, CEO of the Foundation said: “Unexpected changes in the life circumstances of many families have resulted in financial hardship, high anxiety, insecurity, instability, isolation and emotional distress. As an NGO, SJAF forges partnerships with corporate bodies with evolving corporate social responsibility policies, to support those whose circumstances push them beyond the brink of poverty. We are grateful for companies like Cool and its staff for this assistance, which was provided when our organisation and the many we support most needed it.”
Laura Jasenaite, Cool’s CEO added: “Fighting against the pandemic was not solely about health matters; it was also about ensuring that no one was left behind during these unprecedented times. We are proud to serve the community we operate in and were therefore more than enthusiastic to support the staff and team of volunteers at St Jean Antide Foundation. Through this relationship we have also learnt a lot about the incredible work this organisation does in our community, many times silently, and I therefore invite the public and fellow companies to support their work in any way they can.”
